Christopher Shays Says Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac Investigation Long Overdue

In response to the indictments of 6 former top executives at government-chartered mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Shays said,

“These indictments are long overdue and raise the question why former Fannie Mae CEO, Frank Raines, was not included. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were a primary cause of the financial meltdown of 2008 and Americans are still suffering because of it.

These institutions were reckless and used their immense financial and government-ordained power to intimidate the financial markets and anyone or any institution that would stand in their way.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac spent a fortune hiring influential people to both lobby FOR them, and put others on their payroll to NOT lobby against them.

They were exempt from Sarbanes-Oxley and the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) rules, regulations and oversight. As a result there was no accountability or transparency, which enabled them to cook their books and overstate their income.”

Shays raised a red flag about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as early as 2002, introducing legislation demanding oversight of the housing finance corporations and placing them under the SEC, like all other public institutions.
